The magic they use is structured, but no one seems to understand the basic structure of spells. Without that knowledge, they can’t go any further into developing new spells. They have to rely on spellbooks that only contain the highest layer of knowledge, that of the spell itself.

You can kind of think of it like them understanding molecules, with a very basic, surface level grasp of elements. But they have no idea what makes up those elements, or how atoms work, or the particles that make up atoms. So they can’t really properly discover new molecules to create.

Do you people not read? The mage god says in literally this chapter to Aaron he could have chosen one other, the first, but she refused all three of them and hence she is now lost to them(prolly cuz of the bread)
