Hilarious. 6 years and 4 volumes later and it STILL doesn’t feel like the start to the end. I wonder what made you think it was even here….

wonder if he will use vicious mockery some-when, and do active perception checks, or maybe meet 3 kobolds on a trenchcoat.
bards are usually wanderers, so maybe it fits. tfc

I think one factor you are both missing, is that very, very few goblins would ever even bother thinking to try what Pyrite did. While goblins can think, most aren’t that smart. Most die very young. Even if they grow up and become chieftains, they typically won’t be very old, and being chieftain doesn’t mean they’ll be particularly smart.

Pyrite is not only relatively old, but he’s has the experiences that allow him to think critically better than probably 99.99% of goblins. Had he died earlier, when he was chieftain of his first tribe, he likely wouldn’t have even considered doing what he did. Maybe even when he was chieftain of the Goldstone Tribe, he wouldn’t have been able to do it. Watching Rags probably gave him a huge boost mentally, since he could see what an actual smart goblin would be like. Plus, he recently got a new class, and it’s been shown classes do have an effect on how yo think, at least somewhat.

And his reasoning isn’t really that far out there. If goblins can access memories of previous goblin lives, why not try and make those memories more deliberate. There are techniques to improve memory that humans know, like memory palaces and such. It’s not inconceivable that a goblin could come up with something similar.

Another thing both of you seemed to have missed, is that both Rags and Reiss were able to have a decent amount of control over what memories trust saw. Sure, at the beginning, Rags couldn’t control it at all, but we saw multiple instances of her deliberately accessing memories – maybe not the exact ones she wanted to see (such as Velan), but she could certainly “browse” through the memories to find one that was relevant to her needs. Reiss seemed to be able to do that even more so.

Like anything else, it’s probably something that requires not just the ability to do so in the first place, but practice. The more a goblin looks back through memories, the better they get at it.

At long last, he was home.

A beautiful chapter. A beautiful song.
