It always tickles me when the people with the harshest criticisms end up being the least attentive readers. (I agree with the thoughts of the most-upvoted comments in the replies about the tactical infeasibility of retrieving the fallen knights, but that could be argued, I guess. The fact that Rags didn’t get the earring cannot.)

The fighting took place primarily in a forest. You can’t often maneuver horses well in a first, and much of their benefits become negatives in that situation. It is usually best to dismount and fight on foot, instead of getting your expensive, highly trained horse killed for no reason. The horses also likely don’t have enchanted armor of the same quality as the knights themselves, if they have any armor at all, so they’d be considerably more vulnerable as well.

By the same token, though, the pikes the goblins use would be mostly useless in the forest too. You really couldn’t move them around too much, due to the trees, so dodging them would be fairly simple. They also proved to be quite worthless against the enchanted armor, anyway.

Retrieving them means going to the area where the trees might fall, and they still think Rags has Graydath, so Bethal probably just didn’t see the 2 sets of gear as worth it.
