Persecutors are just misguided protective parts of a person that tend to take on the internal narrative of abusers. As a person living with the disorder, it’s interesting the similarities in his experience of the me/not me feeling, a voice that can’t be stopped, and then taking over your body and doing something that you only vaguely remember or don’t remember at all. Also challenging the identity asking it to prove its existence, but nothing happening so you think you’re making it up or insane. It’s terrifying when you don’t know what’s happening to you. It’s incredible writing that captures the experience of meeting a disconnected identity and the conflict it creates. Please note, it’s a big myth that having DID means you’re violent or experiencing psychosis. We are victims of violence and usually shut down and dissociate/space out when confronted. It’s fine with Tom given it’s not explicitly stated what the voice is and it’s presented to fit in a magical world.

The voice wasn’t italicized because Tom was playing both parts himself. He was deluding himself into believing that it really was just him all along, and he could stop the voice whenever he wanted, if he really wanted to.

I didn’t catch that one, but I’ve headcanoned Ryoka as trans since her first appearance. It just makes sense to me, I really don’t care if it’s ever proven or disproven. (And if it was deliberate, there were ample opportunities, I think..)

Yet, in the previous chapters I kept twisting my face in clownesque grimaces. For no reason. It was an urge.

I don’t get why, but not so much in this chapter!! But then, the italic voice was entirely silent, even for when Tom argued with his own reflection. Which was a conversation I didn’t understand – was that his insanity telling hin everything was normal, or was he simply self-entertaining and rationally deliberating. Weird.
