They would probably die fairly quickly. We have nothing close to monsters that people really “fight”, and these types of people would almost certainly overestimate themselves and underestimate monsters.

Even if they managed to survive the immediate dangers, their personality would probably have them seek out ever stronger and more deadly monsters, and ignore the careful planning that people reaching gold/named rank would typically develop. For example, I could totally see one going to the Liscor dungeon, entering a room with some monsters on the other side, and immediately running off to fight them – and completely ignoring the dozen traps in the room, where after they get shot, stabbed, burned, melted, cut into pieces, and then fall into a pit to get eaten by giant maggots.

I agree. Which part of SA do they use “Mate”? It gave me Australian vibes. Born a South African who lived for a few years in Aus, I kept switching reading between a thick African and an outback Australian accent. It was a little unnerving. But, I can ignore it and still enjoy this amazing story I’ve been reading for years now.
P.S. The Japanese character depiction is spot on. I live in Japan now so it was nice fun to see the foreign text and cultural nuance through the characters.

Well done with the South African naming and lingo… very pleasingly accurate…. From a South African.

I never like to assume, so: is viscous athlete’s foot a thing in this world? Or did you mean vicious?

Im from South Africa. My 28 year old son introduced we to this book. I’m nearly 50, fantasy is not generally a genre I’d choose to read, and I was very sceptical…but I was bored, it was lockdown, and I didn’t have anything else to read…
Well. I’m hooked! I can’t get enough of the story. I’m loving it, and I can’t wait for someone to make a movie based on this book!
I love the South African touch! We say “ya” rather than “yeah” and ” AG shame” is more like “oh how cute!” And “just now” is really a very vague timeline, but definitely does not mean immediately ?.
Luan is an Afrikaans name, but Khumalo is a Xhosa or Zulu family name, so it’s not unheard of,but unlikely that a Xhosa or Zulu family would name a son with such a typically Afrikaans first name..
But I thoroughly enjoyed the chapter, and I’m loving the story ! Keep it flowing!

Just wanted to pop in and say that there’s another South African reading your story and absolutely loving it!

Also I’d just like to point out that “Ag, Shame” isn’t really good. It’s more used in the context of solidarity or empathy. Sometimes used when something is too damn cute as well though which is suppose counts as good.

In this case it would be more like, ” Ag, Shame man, maybe you’ll find a class to do with illistration?”

Or if they see a Gnoll child, “Ag, Shame! It’s so fluffy!”

It’s been so long that you probably won’t see this comment but just thought I’d pitch in.

Loved the use of, “Just now” though!

“I’m from South Africa.”
“Oh! What place in south Africa?”
Luan paused, [extended awkward moment “] I’ve met a lot of people who have no idea South Africa is a place.”

Luan should have told them instead from what place – city, or region – in South Africa he is, shaping the awkward moment slightly different. As a major country, [South Africa] competes in size with [all states on the US-West Coast + Nevada]. And wesr coast people
So no, S.A. isn’t “a place”; and for someone versed in geography, it would make sense to ask further; and for someone actually from there, makes sense to answer with his hometown even if people in Japan never heard of it… (but don’t underestimate Japanese who are traveling abroad, either!! )
Or, the question could have been “which country”, or “which nation”, so only switch out ‘place’ with ‘country’.

I hope you can tell that I dearly love the Wandering Inn, and that my stream of nitpicks and comments is just how it might be improved before final publishing.
