I love that one message here is that Pawn is allowed to recognize his limitations and play to his strengths and delegate tasks.
It could have gone another way with the message being that he just needs to muster up his determination and will power and command those soldiers because he’s supposed to and no one else can, and he just needs to believe harder and steel his determination.
This message that we ended up with instead feels far more realistic, believable, kind, and gentle. And we got to see the collective prayer in action and the Soldiers finding some nonverbal communication methods of expression, and even expression through sound which feels like a big step!
I could totally see Ryoka teaching Pawn morsecode and then him, or even both of them teaching it to some of the soldiers, and them teaching it to the rest of the individuals and then eventually it getting passed to all the Soldiers and that opening up a whole new language of communication for them. I wonder if they can create longer and shorter clicking sounds with their mandibles?

Also I commented on the last chapter that I hoped the barmaid conflict had a satisfying resolution, and it totally DID!
You did not build up all that tension to let us down in the end. And the fact that the inexplicable tripping came from invisible Ryoka was such a great reveal. And that Lyonette finally got to tell Erin that Toren really had been mistreating her all that time and Erin never believed her, was wow yes. Love that you give your main character room and opportunities to grow this way.

I also appreciate that you wanted it to come across nuanced and not make it solely any one parties fault. I appreciate that, although I was very much hoping for those two human barmaids to get what was coming to them so.. idk if you intended for us to feel that way too haha

Anyways, I still believe they can be redeemed if you so choose, after Lyonette I will believe anyone in this story can be skillfully redeemed by you. Speaking of, more Toren please!! (me just hoping to myself, as this was all written 8 years ago!) It helps me to pretend I’m in the same timeline as you all though, makes me feel included :’D

I think this is the best chapter so far. While a few others have made me feel more or been more exciting, this chapter relied on incredible growth and character development over the last few volumes that never felt too quick or forced. It made Pawn’s march and Lyonette standing up for herself that much more intense and emotional.

I know this chapter will eventually be superseded by another, I enjoyed every second of this and will continue to look back at it fondly. Incredible work pirateaba!

Just realized that it almost fits in the world with the gods literally being dead and what not

I mean ryoka spelled it out, a true princess should understand the jobs of her servants, aka get a lot of classes to merge into a megazord-queen

Since mid May this has steadily become one of my favorite pieces of fiction I’ve ever read. Pawn is such a stand out character for me and that’s coming from a very anti organized religion background. Never had I wanted faith for us more in my life. It may have been I always had.

Thank you for this pirate. I appreciate your stories like water in the desert and a cool breeze in a humid day.
