It made me think though.
The way that Trey reacted to her, and me as a reader, through his eyes, made me think about our modern reaction to finding out that really beautiful women have had a ton of plastic surgery. Which was kind of hinted at when Teres said “they’re fake.” Like there’s a sadness and tragedy that someone feels they need to change their entire appearance and keep that up all the time, and also for good reason, since we do judge people as “better” for fitting into societies beauty standards. We’re conditioned to.
Thought experiment: Picture Mars, without the glamour, a great warrior.
Now picture Mars if the glamour was real: a great warrior who’s also inhumanely hot and attractive.
Who do we find more impressive, worthy of attention, respect, etc…
I definitely have my biases

Anyways, I’m hoping these seeming inconsistencies will be explained later – that’s one reason I stay invested in Flos’s chapters. I feel like Pirateeva is deliberately keeping him ethically mysterious, using contradictions to make us guess. Trey seems like a stand-in for us as readers, learning about Flos and slowly piecing together his character at the same time we are. For now I’m still here waiting hopefully for resolutions to these contradictions and mysteries in Flos’s character.
(Don’t let me down future chapters that have already been written!)

Omg yes thank you for saying this. It really doesn’t add up, the whole “people follow me because I give them a dream. A dream of something better.”
How does waging war give them something better? Is it like how Goblins gain power? Take resources from others and give them to your followers? That’s the dream? Seems like a very violent bloody method to gain resources. And very just like low low level morality. With Flos’s whole “I’m such an honorable and beloved King” thing, I expect him to have at least some higher moral explanation to try to justify his actions, even if it’s not actually a valid justification.

Speaking of moral justifications, I also don’t understand his beliefs about honorable reasons for going to war. I think someone else mentioned this earlier – if he’s so strict about only going to war for honorable reasons, how did he become the King of Destruction, and how is his goal to conquer the entire world? Those don’t line up.

You can’t say “I want to conquer the entire world” and also claim you only go to war for honorable reasons…

I loved the Doctor chapters, although I do agree about Flos here, the whole “because I am a King” thing felt very cringe whenever he kept repeating it

Idk Pirateeva has said that she doesn’t necessarily agree with the characters she writes so I think there is a chance that we are still supposed to think that Flos is in the wrong. Especially after the choice at the end with selling the captives to slavers and how both Trey and Gazi felt about it.

The only thing I liked was the revenge of Drevish at the end.
I’m a big fan of architecture and I also play a game called Fortnite Save the World, where you can enchant your forts with lightening and it is very satisfying standing on the battlements as you watch your enemies fry.
I do wish it wasn’t Gazi that got to push the button, because although she is a bit interesting, she is mostly just a killing machine that hurts our main protagonists and those they care about, and cut those gnolls down with no good reason to.
Mars true form seems a bit patterned on Joan of Arc, and perhaps her glorified form is how her troops saw her when her spirit transformed her in battle.

“STARTING to lose interest”?
UGH, I groaned as soon as I saw we were getting more than one or two K chapters.
I finally had to resort to text to speech at double speed just to get through these chapters.
I didn’t want to skip them altogether in case there was a tidbit that circled back to the characters and stories I give a damn about.
It badly needs a TL/DR summary for those of us with no patience for “Chad and Friends Boring, Predictable Epic Adventure of his Unending, Drawn Out Awesomeness.”
Sorry to be so negative, but it is like this needed to be a separate book entirely, with a warning label.
I have LOVED all the other characters and their stories with all their twists and turns and surprises, to the point I have hyperfocused on it, ignoring my favorite video games and other distractions.
Gazi had some promise but only when she was interacting with Erin. Her character never got any deeper or more interesting.
Trey and Teres are only interesting for their British Cuisine and that is saying something!
Speaking of Erin, could she PLEASE Minotaur Punch Flos in the tenders at some point?

well, it is stated, the plan was simple, go ruffle their feathers, and then use the supa magicks no one has ever seen being used, they won!, no casualties are mentioned, even with smoke u just cant part a sea of soldiers in tight formation, confusion can only do that much, maybe if the number of ranks were mentioned usually the wide of armies it is mirroed and limited by the terrain of the fight, so usually “wider, better” cuz u can then envelop, but an army that is timid would then try to just mirror the other side, and deep their ranks to kingdom come. Well, also the general should have moved command center and critical equipment, like da trebuchets, a bit more of confusion wouldnt do much harm, and u can keep ur assets safe, meanwhile attrition for both sides would win the battle to da bigga army, no need for heavy strategy if u could trade 1 for 1.
For last, poor trey, da big bazookas are a lie.

I’m still mad that people hated ryoka when she came out wtf. flos has a weird vibe though, I mean in personality rather than the writing, very scary stuff.
