Reading this, I keep thinking back to Ceria & Pisces introduction to Teriarch. The basic spells are incredibly useful to have mastered, but Ceria had a bad attitude about it while at Wistram. Regretful, but also relatable.

The spider he only figured out how to do at that point. That was due to the chitin being less able to hold the animation spells compared to bone. You could think of this as being not only necromancy, but also somewhat of a combination with golems or something like that – necromancy is generally bones and dead flesh, so another type of material would be non-ideal.

For the other stuff, he doesn’t say that he can’t do it, just that it isn’t as easy as Ryoka seemed to think is was. Animating a mouse and having it spy might have been within his abilities, but making an undead bird fly? You’d have to not only know how their body moved, but also understand the mechanics of flight.

He was also saying that in reference to making non-humanoid creations for combat. Which, again, seems simple, but animals require completely different musculature and movements. So you’d have to learn all of that, and then adapt the animation spells – which are designed for humanoid constructs – to work properly. Again, not impossible, but not nearly as easy as just casting [Raise Undead] on a bear corpse and having it work.

So. Wistram is like a political organization. They will not give you power until They are sure you are part of them. They either control or corrupt you, So They make sure that you wont flip the table. Disgusting.
