It doesn’t really take that much knowledge to figure out why they are calling some of them Not Goblin.

The Goblin Lord is a necromancer, which is probably already weird for goblins in general since normally their magic is shamanistic, whereas necromancy falls more in line with standard mage classifications. But, beyond that, he doesn’t just use regular undead, but undead goblins. For goblins, their lives are already hard enough, but he doesn’t even let them have the release that is death, forcing them to continue to fight. And, while Rags herself might not know, we as readers know that the undead goblins can also be used as “suicide” bombers. So he’s not just having them fight after death, but often just using them as a tool after they already died for him. Should be pretty simple to see why that might be considered Not Goblin.

For Tremborag, he’s imitating humans. Depending on what she’s seen in her racial memories, there may be nothing like how his tribe is acting. This one is a bit sketchier, since she probably hasn’t viewed an exceptionally huge amount of memories. However, I imagine that what we’ve had described as readers is probably not close to what Rags sees, and there could be a lot of stuff that simply doesn’t match up with basically any of the memories she’s seen so far.

That being said, there is also the tie-in with Garen. Everything she’s ever experienced or seen in memories has probably had all goblins properly submitting to their chieftain. Garen has subverted that, and Tremborag just goes along with it. If that truly goes against everything she’s seen in the memories she’s viewed, that would be a very Not Goblin thing from both of them.

Rags was able to view memories prior to actually getting the Chieftain class, so it’s plausible any goblins could do so to a limited extent once they gain enough authority within a tribe. I could easily see some hobs and shamans being able to do so, even if they don’t always do it that often. Especially if the memories aren’t controllable at lesser authorities, it could still show hobs how to effectively “be a proper hob” on occasion, and reinforce the culture overall.

They’ve clearly also imitated the human tendency for backstabbing, social game playing, misogyny and petty disrespect. These things all make humans weaker, compared to the unified teamwork of a goblin tribe. Empires fall because of this kind of self-aggrandisement; it doesn’t do much for to have better, stronger, armoured warriors of their command structure falls apart.

But, but, but…. becoming more like humans allowed Trem’s goblins to gather safely in a city. Allowed them to develop tactics weapons armor. Allowed them to amass a huge army that is capable of self sustainment WITHOUT leaving a path of destruction in their wake. True it feels wrong to use plates and tables but these imitations are huge part of what has allowed Trem’s goblins Harder Better Faster Stronger!@!

The sense of Goblin vs. Not Golblin seems to be a racial memory… but only accessible to higher ranked gobs… the mechanics of this access to the deeper pool of racial identity is going to be interesting.

I didn’t think that would be something I was excited for, but here it is and here I am. Screw you Garen Redfang, you’re a mean guy and an awful leader taking advantage of young Rags
