I love all the character. I thought the half elf, Celia was going to make it.

Just recently started reading this, so keep in mind that my knowledge is purely limited to the first chapter, and I have no idea how things develop in the coming 9+ Chapters. But so so far, yeah; I concur that Ryoka is definitely a narrative issue.
In terms of personality and characterization, she’s fine. Arguably written quite well, in fact; she’s not a particularly *likeable* character to start with, but she’s a reasonably interesting and complex one, with lots of potential for development and growth that could easily become sympathetic and likeable in the future.

The issue is with everything surrounding her. Like the idea that she’s somehow immune to Scrying Spells, because her name is written in Kanji on her birth certificate, which just causes so, so many issues in terms of consistent worldbuilding. Does it mean that anyone who has no written record of their birth name is immune to scrying? How about those whose records were destroyed somehow? Or where someone made an error and spelled their name wrong, or the handwriting is illegible? Or where the entire records are in a language foreign to the caster? How about cases of duplicate names; if there’s multiple people with the same name, does the Scrying Spell get confused? And so on, and so forth.
It might seem minor, but actually causes a fair number of issues once you start to think about it.

It’s roughly similar with her rejection of the native [Class/Level/Skill] system. She’s shown as arrogant and stubborn, so on its own it fits her personality and characterization well. The problem is that the chapters focusing on her seem intent on proving her right, even as it contradicts established facts and worldbuilding from other chapters. For example, in Erin’s chapters it’s shown that class-levels and skills come with information, and, well, skills as well; as her [Innkeeper] class levels, she becomes better at cleaning, achieving better results more quickly. As she gains [Skills] pertaining to cooking and brewing, she gains the knowledge to actually make use of said [Skills]. And more or less the same applies to other people in Erin’s chapters, like the Antinium Workers who gained [Tactician] levels from playing chess also making reasonably sound tactical decisions on the battlefield.

And yet, in Ryoka’s chapters, all of the other Runner’s Guild characters are noted to have terrible running forms and skills (not [Skills]) despite the fact that they’re from the Guild’s middle- to upper echelons and have been doing this for quite a while. It seemingly contradicts previously established worldbuilding.

Add in everything else, like her almost instantly mastering a magic spell the moment magic is introduced to her, her using her hobbyist Martial Arts skills to out-fight people who’ve been fighting for a living for years, and in general surviving situations that are repeatedly shown to be incredibly dangerous even to highly competent people within this setting while she is utterly ignorant, and it’s frankly no wonder she doesn’t sit right with you (and at least some others).

I think I like the world building the most and wish to see more of it. Of the characters my favorite is the mad king despite him appearing only once, but during that one time he exuded so much passion and energy in his monologue that I cannot wait to see him again.

Meanwhile oddly enough my least favorite character is Erin. I got major beef with how she was written.

She does not seem to be wanting to go home, even though it has been explicitly stated that she wants to go home. Her actions do not move her toward this goal and do not appear to be intended to do so, which I think is most evident when she discovers that this world has chess. Being a chess player, she would know the history or at least the anecdote of its origin and know that chess was created in her home world at least 1500 years. In this world, it is 5 years old (probably not Earth year) and was introduced by the Titan.

At first when I read this I thought that this would be a lead. This Titan somehow got access to Earth’s culture if not Earth itself, and might even comes from there. Yet Erin either does not notice, which would make her incredibly oblivious, or does not care, which would contradict her stated goal, and as the story went along I am more and more inclined to believe the former, which diminish greatly my enjoyment of her character.

It is also odd that they speak English and write using Latin characters, but that is just Isekai. I can forgive her for not investigating it, even though she should have. I do hope that there is an in world reason why and that you explore the relationships between the two worlds, not enough authors do.

Another reason I think Erin is weak as a character is her absurd pacifism. Her not wanting to kill goblins and not wanting them to be killed make more sense later in the story but not at the beginning, where she was chased and attacked by a group of goblins. I get her dislike of confrontation, it is just survival, but the chieftain’s attack did not thing to change her mind on this, other than giving her some trauma about melting faces, which yeah realistic enough.

I could be excused if by then she had some bonding with the goblins, or Rags. Death would still shaken her when Relc presented her with the goblin heads, but after multiple life-threatening attack, you would think her sympathy would not extend to them so much.

This gets worst when she killed the shield spiders. Her saying “killing is wrong” felt very stupid and hypocritical when I read it as Erin is definitely not a vegetarian. It makes her sound sheltered, which could work as she is from a world more peaceful, but it also make her sound like she is incapable of critical thought. Gazi did press her on this issue, somewhat, so it was not too bad.

Her pacifism and naivety read like a character flaw that she must overcome, which she kinda did by the end, but it was not handled satisfyingly. Ironically her pacifism and naivety are also her best traits, as they allow her to bridge the gaps between the species. Growing up in a world where xenophobia is seen as amoral has perks.

Her [Immoral moment] skill is not very well defined. Two of three times it was mentioned have something to with chess, and what it does is not very well defined. There are moments where she interacts with other characters which make me cringe and give me the impression she is not exactly the brightest bulb.

Some of her triumphs felt unearned, at least to me, but it could be that I have read more grisly materials, where victories tend to have a price tag.

The worst aspect of her character is her placement in the world. She is an innkeeper, and as such, cannot explore the world, so while the narrative frames her as the protagonist, she is read more like a deuteragonist, one who is shadowed by the other characters who can move around. I’m more interested in Ryoka, even though she receive less time. It also does not make much sense plot wise, as previously stated her goal is to go home, and the story also has stated that she have to find people who can help her, who are also not here. They might come to the inn, but unless Erin was the one to call them there, it would only make her more passive.

Also I have noticed that in dialogues where a character said something, did something, and that same character continued talking, you separated it into three paragraphs, which is very odd. Commonly they are kept in a single paragraph which makes knowing who was talking easier.

Otherwise, great work.

Not a typo, but the link to the next chapter leads to a mostly empty page, hitting next chapter leads to Book 2 but you might as well just link Book 2 from this chapter.
