Yes, Ryoka does not make the smartest decisions, but that’s because she’s at rock bottom again, after already hitting rock bottom several times the last few chapters. She’s angry at the world and feels like a failure and is borderline suicidal. She’s decided that either the world can get out of her way, or she can die, and either outcome is OK with her. Having yet another person try to help her by telling her what not to do… it’s understandable that she doesn’t react well (even though objectively she is way out of line).
It’s felt like we’ve been building up to this for a while now — at some point she has to see how badly she’s behaving to everyone else in her life, and see how her own feelings of unworthiness cause her to be toxically independant. In this chapter, she finally does, because it’s that or die.
Yes, objectively it would have been way better for her to just roast Persua with the wand instead of causing so much collateral damage, that was dumb. But again, it seems like she was basically suicidal, up till the point where she decided she didn’t actually want to die. And I can forgive her for not really knowing how far away the caravan was or how much of the bloodfields she was waking up given that she was running for her life and mortally injured…

However, I honestly think, reading back on it a second time, that perhaps that’s just a symptom of the reader being disappointed in Ryoka from the last chapter. It’s a very introspective chapter, and though there’s action it feels performative as a mere symptom of this introspection and that somewhat undermines the climactic catharsis of this chapter. So in a chapter where we hope to see Ryoka make amends through climactic external action, instead we get more of the part which we are the least interested in, that is, Ryoka’s internal monologue, which has been thematic in the last few Ryoka chapters, and make us as readers feel weary and frustrated. I liked the last chapter, and reading this chapter I like this one, but reading them back to back is… heavy. It’s a lot of mounting tension without any real breaks in a way that is good writing but is just a bit, much for me, especially considering the length. That being said, I really like where Ryoka ended up at the end of this chapter, reaffirming her liyalty to her friends and getting somewhat of a grip on her temper. I can see the point of this chapter and I encourage any first time readers to push on despite this being a potentially difficult chapter at least to the end of volume 1. By then, you’ll be hooked and I think the authorial intent behind TWI is a lot clearer for those who might struggle with slower paced, slightly darker novels.

This way she feels better

It’s long, for one. The bits with Ysara are interesting, but I can’t stop the feeling the writing was a little stilted, especially at the beginning. Another pass at it could have helped, perhaps.

Gazi’s appearance this chapter had been well established beforehand, but it was still a strike out of the blue and the payoff didn’t feel very satisfying. Ryoka’s injuries, even knowing she could heal them up, were a bit of a stretch as well. So was the suicide play, which had no real lasting consequences, and though the new flora and fauna in the Blodfields is fascinating, they didn’t feel as deadly as they should’ve been.

Persua’s motivations were alright, but the other two runners were acting like absolute rubes. Why would you go to the one place in the continent worse than the High Passes just to kill someone? That’s way too much commitment from supposed ‘cowards’. The geas I did like though, that bit was fun while it lasted.

should be “Ysara and Ryoka”

Just to die together with Persua, she wakes up the Bloodfields and endangers all of the people in the caravan trying to protect her. She still only thinks about herself

This is more than just a “revision” to discuss, there’s actual readers here you’re spoiling stuff for, be more considerate and go to actual forums
