Same.
At the start she was planely annoying. Because a character that actively push against story development is not fun to read. Especially when it’s a main character.
Also, when she “started to like” magnolia(in their second visit) I was worried it’s going to be a case of annoying character aniiyes mc but mc is a masochist or something.
But then she acted as the writer introduced her at the start- independent, don’t like taking orders.
Band now she is more proactive, even if not completely.
So yeah, she grew on me as well

exactly, there is not a single reason that she should be able to outrun Relc, who runs so fast he basically blurs past Erin. like what? is she a superhuman who ran 10x faster than all the other runners when she competed in track on earth?

Saying she’s a Mary Sue that’s better than everyone by not trying is an incredibly dumb take, because half of Ryoka’s entire characterisation is that she’s actually putting in effort, instead of only leaning on Classes. She’s someone who got into college on an athletic scholarship, no shit she’s fast, especially compared to a low-ish level person with no technique. She’s been putting in the effort for years. It’s trained skill vs [Skills], and not top tier ones either.

And she doesn’t question why people are mean to her. It’s fairly obvious, because the other half of her character is that frankly Ryoka is an absolute asshole. And she knows this. But like any stubborn, kinda shitty, angsty teenager, that’s something she hasn’t tried to work on. Yet.

She’s also a character that goes through a lot of growth. Perhaps more than anyone else in this story. The asshole thing is already starting to change a bit, and she’s just starting to bump up against the limit of what she can do without levels.

And the knowledge? She has a reasonable education and knows how to make ice cream. That’s not something groundbreaking for an 18 year old from New York about to go into college.

I don’t think it’s ever confirmed, but considering Ryoka and Erin are on two sides of the same mountain range, it’s probably the same one. Unless there’s TWO dragons in the High Passes, which seems unlikely.

If you actually read her chapters you’d know she’s not a Mary sue. There’s story reasons for everything she’s good at and she’s had more than her fair share of struggles, from pissing off the runners guild to the point where a group of them conspire and shatter Ryoka’s leg- and hell, she’s already nearly died in the previous R chapter.

Not to mention she can’t be a mary sue by definition as she has several character flaws that have gotten her in trouble many times-her stubbornness, habit of being a smart ass and just generally being completely unlikeable to the people around her.

If you don’t like her because of her personality traits that’s fine, and i don’t like Ryoka much either, but calling her a Mary Sue is incorrect.

This is a big fish small pond sort of situation. It has been mentioned several times that the area around Celum is particularly safe for Runners, to put it in game terms Ryoka is basically an experienced player hanging around the newbie starting town, obviously she is superior to the Runners there. She also is actually trained in martial arts so obviously she’s a better fighter than the other Runners as Runners aren’t fighters, Street Runners outright don’t even need to know how to handle combat and City Runners only need to know how to avoid local monsters and escape when encountering them. As for people staring at her for how pretty she is, it’s less she’s pretty and more that she’s exotic, Asian people (even if only half Asian) don’t exist in this world, so her appearance is extremely unique and will obviously draw attention.
