Ryoka is a very good runner in peak shape. She’s also 6 foot so she probably has a much longer natural stride than most humans in this world. (especially if it’s a medieval world)This area is basically a backwater part of Izril.The runners here go out of their way to play it safe. You know what not only seems to give you levels, but improves your physical fitness? Pushing yourself.As we’ve seen many skills are often either situational or have limited duration/scope. We saw that in short bursts they were able to keep up, but it does not last.Skills seem to follow need, desires, and/or accomplishments. Again these runners seem to favor safety over anything else so it’s possible their skills are mostly related toward staying alive rather than pure speed and endurance. Also we see runners like Garia have specific niches.It seems a lot of runners view this as a temporary gig and so may have other classes/skills.Ryoka is like some College track athlete competing against the JV squad of a rural high school. A few low level running skills aren’t going to make up for all that.

Currently, I’m running to the not-so-fast-paced song, “Heathens” by twenty one pilots.
* Twenty One Pilots.

Everyone else is (relatively) shitty runners with skills to compensate for it, she hasn’t met someone with the same level of skill as her that also uses skills

She’s been playing in the world’s kiddy box (same one little miss innkeeper is a decent fighter in) and it’s made her gameify or at least make the world like a fantasy, she’s only fought what amounts to green children so she thinks she’s relatively strong, she’s only met the lower class apart from a Nobel who specializes in people skills so she thinks she’s smarter than most, she’s been playing around with the easy route city runners so she thinks she’s the best runner outside of couriers, she hasn’t had the slap of reality yet

There have been numerous references by Ryoka of how bad the running forms of most Runners are. This makes perfect sense, since skills would make up for the shortcomings of many Runners in the lower levels. They’d never need to learn better form to get by as a Street Runner, once they get a couple skills to help out. Even most City Runners would end up relying heavily on skills rather than proper form. So, it makes a fair bit of sense that someone who has trained for years to run – getting a college scholarship for a sport isn’t all that easy – to be better than most of them.

She doesn’t really have a concept of how good most Gold Rank adventurers are, to compare herself to them. Yes, she can beat up goblins… but so can nearly anyone who would have trained as long as she had in martial arts.

Her comments about martial artists is somewhat true – there is relatively no need for martial artists to exist in a world with skills, in any sort of quantity like on Earth. There are some around, but that’s more for spoiler territory.

All that being said, the story does explain later on for some of the inconsistencies. But overall, as another commenter pointed out, saying Ryoka has an over-inflated view of herself is definitely an understatement.

“The wolf packs slows” -> “The wolf packs slow” / “The wolf pack slows” / “The wolves slow” (any of these would work)

Apparently it was one of the last ‘great forests’ of the world, the Vale Forest.

Should be “Vail Forest”, if later chapters have it correct, and this isn’t a spelling retcon.
